Z-index

Stacking order of overlapping elements.

In more detail

What It Means

Z-index decides which element sits on top when two elements overlap on the page. It is not arbitrary, it works like an org chart, with modals sitting above sticky navigation, which sits above dropdowns, which sits above ordinary content.

See it in context on the homepage: Z-Index: The Layer Cake.
